Enviro Squad: Young Voices, Lasting Change
Enviro Squad means to us…
Our students have a number of opportunities to make change and have an impact on our school community. One of them is to become an Enviro Squad leader. At the beginning of the year, students are nominated and voted in by peers to be leaders to represent the school, the students and be environmental advocates for our planet. They meet a number of times during the term to plan, discuss and implement projects or activities. They even get to join an online forum with other like minded school students within Victoria. The Enviro Squad team is facilitated by Alex Green and Farmer Jill.
Enviro Squad Achievements
At Wandin Yallock Primary School, our Enviro Squad is leading the way in caring for our environment and inspiring the whole school community. Through their initiative, energy, and teamwork, they are helping students develop leadership skills, responsibility, and a sense of pride in making a difference.
Waste Warriors
The Enviro Squad launched the “Waste Warriors” station, where any student can grab a tub and tongs to collect rubbish across the school grounds. Wearing their special hi-vis vests, students take ownership of keeping their school clean and safe, learning the value of action and stewardship.
Top Recognition for Sustainability
In 2025, Wandin Yallock Primary School proudly received the top prize at the ResourceSmart Schools Awards. This achievement recognises the dedication, creativity, and leadership of our Enviro Squad and highlights how student-led initiatives can have a lasting impact on both our school and the wider community. Container Collection and Fundraising
The Squad began collecting empty containers to fundraise through the Container Deposit Scheme (CDS). Students collect water bottles and juice packs from special lunch days, alongside donations from staff and families. This program teaches students responsibility, teamwork, and the power of collective action for a cause.
Eco, Our Mascot
To make their mission even more engaging, the Enviro Squad anointed a turtle plushie as their mascot, naming it “Eco.” Eco reminds everyone in the school of the importance of protecting our planet and encourages students to think sustainably every day.
Through their work, the Enviro Squad shows that even young students can be environmental leaders, role models, and change-makers. Their passion, initiative, and teamwork continue to inspire the whole school to care for the environment and take action every day.
